From timeless investment pieces to playful statement styles.
Receiving something sparkly is usually tied to a big event, like an engagement, graduation, or birthday. But investing in a jewelry gift just for yourself? That’s one of several 2023 jewelry trends on the rise. Whether costume or fine jewelry, designers are noticing more demand for standout earrings, rings, and necklaces that reflect shoppers’ personalities and interests—and the bigger the statement, the better. “We’ve seen far more demand for bolder pieces,” says designer Brent Neale.
The shift toward using jewelry for a true personal statement has been a long time coming. “[During] the past two years with the pandemic, everyone needed colorful, uplifting, [and] fun jewelry, as a way to boost their moods,” explains Francesca Simons, a fine jewelry publicist who launched her own consultancy in 2016. That bright and whimsical aesthetic will continue in 2023, with chunky cuffs and eye-catching earrings also trending upward. Plus, there’s renewed interest in pieces that feel intentional, perhaps custom designs (something Neale has seen demand increase for), or small personal splurges like a signet ring or tennis bracelet.
“[Clients are looking for] something that speaks to them to purchase for themselves, rather than waiting for someone else to gift them a piece without their input,” says Baylee Zwart, CEO and founder of Azlee jewelry. “Fine jewelry has become something you wear and enjoy every day, not something that sits in a safe for years to come.”
Ahead, learn more about seven expert-approved 2023 jewelry trends poised to take off in the year ahead and the best pieces to shop for each look. Guaranteed, there’s something to satisfy minimalists and maximalists alike.
“I think people have begun to wear earrings again,” says Neale. “During the pandemic, we really saw that stop because of masks and people being less social. But recently, earrings sales have been coming back in a big way.”
On runways ranging from Givenchy to Tory Burch, bold cuffs worn at the wrist, or higher up on the arm were a favorite style for spring 2023. Oversized or dainty, the choice is yours.
“Colored stones are continuing to gain traction—especially emeralds, which I think are here to stay,” says Zwart. Instead of a classic tennis bracelet or diamond studs, try swapping for bold emeralds instead.
Emerging labels like Chopova Lowena and Collina Strada championed chunky chains on the runways for spring 2023. Try layering mixed metals (a trend Zwart sees picking up next year) for an updated touch.
“I think the signet and pinky will become more popular. [A]ll the celebrities all wearing them, plus new brands are coming up with cool, unique takes on these styles,” says Simons. ” More and more retailers are stocking signets and pinky rings.”
“Personalized jewelry has been especially strong since the pandemic, but I expect the trend to continue,” says Simons. “These pieces are irreplaceable and worn close to the heart, a keepsake.”
“Heart jewelry has had a consistent run, and we still demand from retailers and celebrities for stunning, fun, unique heart jewels,” says Simons. Look to runways like Versace and Chael for further proof of heart jewelry’s popularity in 2023.
