Experts weigh in on the looks they expect to break out on the platform in the year ahead.

2022 was the year that “core” fashion took over the internet. New sub-trends seemed to sweep the collective consciousness on a weekly basis, from balletcore to barbiecore. But the bright, kooky styles à la Portia of White Lotus are headed in a new direction in the new year. Looking forward to 2023 trends on TikTok, experts predict the fashion phenomenon will move in a darker and more chaotic direction.

“‘Sleaze’ is being used as an alternative to the ‘core’ suffix to indicate the subversion of an aesthetic,” says Agustina Panzoni, a fashion trend researcher who goes by @thealgorythm on TikTok. “Example: Twee turned into Tweeze by choosing darker color palettes and less polished styling.” Whether you participated in the Indie Sleaze era (is it too on the nose to call it Tumblrcore?), the punk, party-fueled aesthetic of the early aughts is back now. If it has yet to hit your For You Page (FYP), expect to see influencers start to stray from the colorful and comfy toward something edgier.

The beauty of TikTok is that, although it’s awash in original content, many influencers are speaking to one another—tapping in to rising ideas and making them their own. On TikTok, style is as much a personal expression as it is a response to larger trends—and that won’t disappear in 2023. “I love scrolling the FYP because it gets me in a very creative space mentally and I’ll be able to make my own spin on existing trends,” says Brittany Xavier, a longtime Instagram influencer who has amassed over five million followers on TikTok. Count on the algorithm to send plenty of inspiration your way in the new year, making it easy to not only spot It-items as they emerge, but to inspire you to embrace your personal style in a trend-forward way.

Panzoni sees beauty trends like siren eyes and fashion trends like mollusk-inspired jewelry as nods to the rise of ocean inspiration. “I’m also excited to see genderless takes on mermaidcore with the likes of Harry Styles championing the trend,” she says. “I loved his mermaidcore take on the ‘Music For A Sushi Restaurant’ music video.”
Ease into the trend with a playful necklace that has a touch of nautical inspiration.
According to Xavier, things are getting dark in 2023. The return of Indie Sleaze by way of “2011 grunge-inspired looks ” is still worth noting. So, turn up the LCD Soundsytem and pull on your best ripped tee.

Queue up Seinfeld or Friends for a little 2023 outfit inspiration. “I still am stuck in the ’90s aesthetic right now,” says Xavier. Expect to see TikTokers adopt not just the style, but haircuts and beauty looks inspired by the era as well.

“We are about to see more aesthetics become subverted and mixed and matched in 2023,” says Panzoni. “I’m so excited to see us all embrace the creative potential of chaos to develop our personal styles.”

Don’t be afraid to get a little chaotic. Mix colors and textures in new and unexpected ways.
Xavier sees leather and faux-leather continuing to rise as a must-wear texture in 2023. Look for moto jackets and pops of color for fresh-feeling takes.

“I’m not entirely sure what the next Miu Miu mini skirt will be…,” Panzoni says of predicting the next It-item to sweep the interwebs. “But, I have a strong feeling it will include black lace. It’s everywhere right now!”
Layer black lace into your look, or wear it all on its own for a more subversive take.
“I’m embracing a strong capsule wardrobe for the months ahead, good quality pieces I can wear again and again,” says Xavier. Look for the continuation of TikTokers recommending everyday staples styled in multiple ways.
A pair of relaxed jeans are an easy staple you can dress up or down. These are the go-to style for trend-forward influencers.
